CHAPSTIK: Barnburner
Unfortunate Miracle Records
Detroit is home to a fifty-megaton nuclear warhead. It's name? Chapstik.
Armed with an album of newly recorded material, the warhead
of a band finds itself on the verge of detonation. With their
newest record, "Barnburner," do they choose to keep the uneasy
peace of mutually assured destruction intact, or let the prophesy
of Armageddon fulfill itself? Only the bowels of the Motor City
know the answer.

CHAPSTIK: Fire! Die In It
Limited Release EP
Compare it to whoever you want, but these hardscrabble
Detroit-area lifers dish out this deceptively simple
riffage, somewhere between sludge and stoner on the
classifi-o-meter, and they deliver it at a volume and
intensity designed to scour your eardrums like steel
wool pads. Vocals are bellowed, snarled, or delivered
in a mock-theatrical Valhalla yell, depending on what
the none-too-serious subject matter at hand but nothing about
the music suggests these guys are kidding for an instant.
This is heavy, punishing, bruising stuff, from the blast
beats of the title track, to the meth-crisped boogie of Mustache,
right down to the shambling crunge of eleven-minute closer
Goat Justice League, which outdooms SLEEP and spends its
latter half crumbling down the mountain in a finale that will
leave the listener physically exhausted.

HELLMOUTH: Destroy Everything. Worship Nothing.
Ferret Records
From www.punknews.org published on January 23rd 2009
Hellmouth is a band that claims to blur the lines between metal, hardcore and punk. Yeah, we've all heard that one before, haven't we? Usually bands that describe themselves as such are truthfully mediocre metalcore bands, with songs high on guitar squeals, double bass and breakdowns and low on substance and reality. Punk fuckin' rock, man. Oddly enough, though, the metal, hardcore and punk line-blurring description fits here. There's a near-perfect balance of elements lifted from each respective genre, creating a sound that's extremely aggressive and surprisingly original.
For those not in the know, Jason Navarro is the vocalist for Hellmouth. Yeah, that same dude from the Suicide Machines who wrote a jangly pop-rock song about his dog many years ago is now waxing misanthropic with the best of them. Lyrics aren't even necessary, really; merely looking at the song titles is all one must do to get an idea of where Navarro and the rest of Hellmouth have been and where they're going. It ain't pretty, to say the least

The music is heavy rock and roll laced with guitar solos, plenty of classic rock influence and an abundance of attitude. Hailing from Detroit, Mean Mother strives to bring fun and debauchery to Detroit's music scene with their whiskey fueled guitar attack and tales of Harley Davidsons, booze, women, and muscle cars.

SHOT BAKER: Awake
Underground Communique Records
"This is the second pressing of Shot Baker's debut full length, Awake. Shot Baker hails from Chicago, IL and plays punk rock with a heavy "Chicago Sound" influence(Naked Raygun, Pegboy) but also at times is reminiscent of Avail & the Bouncing Souls. The band wasn't happy with the way the first version sounded and looked so they went in and re-recorded everything except the drums. They also re-recorded a song called "Echoes of the Dead" (that was supposed to appear on the original release) and removed the 5 songs from their Time to Panic EP, which was their demo...and changed the artwork completely. The band feels the album is complete now and can stand on it's own."

THE SUMMER PLEDGE: You Are You
Woodbridge Records
(From the Detroit Underground website)...Existing as a Detroit based quartet for the better part of two years and recently becoming a qunitet, the Summer Pledge incorporates elements of prog/ambient/post-rock backed by deep, exploratory content. Feedback heavy vamping backed by meaty guitar and crafty drums creates a wall of multi-layered and infinitely expansive sound. Originally formed via mutual previous band envy and started up in 2007 after meeting Jeremy Damaske through former band-mate Matt Conzett (Letters in Binary). Since becoming an official band, the Summer Pledge has catapulted into the Detroit music scene, establishing a distinct sound highly divergent from the garage style rock listeners expect Detroit indie music to emulate.
The airy and ambient swirl of shoegaze and space-rock produced by plenty of feedback, syncopated beats, understated vocals, and introspective lyrics is unlike anything youve ever heard from the Detroit scene. Their debut album You are You is a swirl of post-rock brilliance consisting of an apex blend of indie rock elements shrouded by a wall of sound and able to change beat and direction without warning. Upon first listen of their debut it is clear that the Summer Pledge cuts no corners when dealing with their music. Each track flows directly into the next with no interruption, disturbance, or detraction from the mostly peaceful yet intermittently intense maelstrom of sound.
Signed to the Detroit based Woodbridge Records label run by fellow Detroit musicians Noman, the Summer Pledge gushes talent, a band likely to snowball into one of the most successful acts the local scene has witnessed in quite awhile.

Unwelcome Guests started as a country/folk duo the
summer of 2004 in the college town of Fredonia, NY.
Here they played regularly behind a 4 song EP entitled
"Hollywood". They have since expanded to a full
four-piece and become a bit of a punk band. They've done
three releases since, all of which were combined and
released as one CD, "Everything We've Done So Far"
"The Unwelcome Guests are a breath of fresh air.
